As I write this on New Year’s Eve, it’s easy to get caught up in goal-setting that revolves around things or specific accomplishments. While goals can certainly motivate me, they can sometimes leave me feeling anxious if I am unsure if I will accomplish them, or empty and unfulfilled once I’ve checked them off the list. You might have the same experience when fulfilling a money goal or sporting trophy. That’s where the practice of setting intentions comes in—a way to guide our lives rooted in values rather than outcomes.
What Is an Intention, and Why Does It Matter?
When working with people, I focus on building an intention. An intention is a guiding principle or purpose that shapes how we approach life. Unlike a goal, which is focused on a specific result, an intention is about the way you want to live, act, and feel. For example, a goal might be to lose 10 pounds, while an intention could be to nurture your body with movement and healthy food. The former focuses on a measurable outcome, while the latter is a commitment to a value-driven way of living.
Intentions matter because they create a foundation for how we show up in the world. They anchor us to our core values and help us align our actions with what truly matters. In essence, they offer a roadmap that keeps us grounded, even when external circumstances are unpredictable.
How Intentions Influence Motivation and Purpose
When we set intentions based on values, they have a profound effect on our motivation and sense of purpose. Unlike goals that can feel rigid or pressure-filled, intentions provide a flexible framework. They allow us to focus on the process rather than the result, making it easier to adapt and stay motivated even when challenges arise.
For example, if your intention is to foster meaningful connections, you’re likely to find joy in small, everyday actions—like calling a friend or spending quality time with family—rather than being fixated on specific milestones, like organising a perfect family gathering. This shift in perspective can be incredibly liberating, as it turns the journey itself into a source of fulfilment.
The Fulfilment of Defining Purpose
When we define a purpose for ourselves, it’s as though a missing puzzle piece falls into place. Purpose provides clarity and direction, helping us make choices that feel meaningful and aligned with our values. This sense of alignment creates a deep, lasting satisfaction that no external achievement can replicate.
Emotionally, having a purpose can boost feelings of self-worth and confidence. It’s easier to navigate life’s challenges when you have a clear “why” guiding your actions. Physically, studies have shown that a strong sense of purpose can reduce stress and improve overall health, as it gives the mind and body a reason to persevere.
The Impact of a Life Without Purpose
On the flip side, when we lack a sense of purpose or meaning, it can leave us feeling adrift. This aimlessness often manifests as stress, anxiety, or even depression. Without a guiding intention, our actions can feel hollow, and it becomes harder to stay motivated or find joy in daily life.
When the mind is untethered from a sense of purpose, it tends to dwell on unhelpful thoughts and habits. This mental clutter can drain energy, leaving us physically fatigued and emotionally disconnected. Over time, this cycle can make it difficult to break free and rediscover what truly matters.
How to Set Values-Based Intentions
- Reflect on Your Core Values: Take time to identify what matters most to you. Is it kindness, growth, connection, or authenticity? Let these values guide your intentions.
- Start with How You Want to Feel: Instead of focusing on what you want to achieve, think about how you want to experience life. For example, “I want to feel at peace with my choices” or “I want to approach challenges with curiosity.”
- Keep It Simple and Flexible: Intentions are not about perfection. They’re about mindful awareness. Avoid setting rigid rules and instead focus on creating a broad, supportive framework.
- Revisit and Refine: Life evolves, and so will your intentions. Periodically reflect on them and make adjustments as needed to stay aligned with your values.
Living with Intention
Living with intention transforms the way we approach life. It shifts our focus from what we want to get to who we want to be. It’s a practice of mindful living that encourages us to find joy and meaning in the present moment, no matter where we are on our journey.
As you go through your day, pause and ask yourself: Am I living in alignment with my values? This simple question can bring clarity, purpose, and peace, reminding you that the life you want is not a distant goal—it’s already within reach.
