A Problem Shared: How Illness Made Me Stop and Reconnect to the Moment

April 2, 2024by Carrie0

What Life Event or Situation Have You Faced?
At age 50, I found a lump on my breast resembling a green pea, which turned out to be breast cancer. Despite leading a physically active lifestyle and prioritising my health, this diagnosis was hard to accept.

Impact on Life
The worst part of having cancer was witnessing people’s horrified and fearful reactions, to the point where I hesitated to share my diagnosis. I struggled with anger towards my body and others, feeling betrayed despite my diligence in maintaining my health. Instead of feeling tired during radiotherapy, I felt wired, constantly keeping busy to avoid facing my fears.

Impact on Identity
Accepting my illness was challenging as I always viewed myself as fit and healthy. I became restless, agitated, and neglected self-care, initially focusing more on others than myself.

Embracing Change
Realising the need for a shift, I adopted a rescue dog named Romeo, despite my fear of dogs. He taught me bravery and self-care, helping me slow down and live in the present moment.

Lessons Learned
Trying to be defiant isn’t always helpful. It’s essential to be aware of how we respond and explore alternative approaches. Finding support from understanding individuals, groups, or pets can make a significant difference. Through my experience with dogs, I discovered the value of living in the moment, rather than constantly looking ahead.

Support Received
During my recovery, I had the unwavering support of my husband and Romeo, who provided companionship and joy during challenging times.

Unmet Needs
I realised the importance of addressing my inner demons and prioritising self-care, recognising the interconnectedness of physical and spiritual health.

Helpful Advice
When faced with illness, addressing spiritual and internal well-being is just as important as physical health. It’s crucial to practise self-compassion, challenge self-critical thoughts, and consciously explore new approaches to self-care.

Self-Reflection
Now, I prioritise my well-being and embrace spontaneity, finding fulfilment in helping others and continuing my spiritual journey.
