Is joining a group course a second-best option?
In my experience working with clients with confidence and self esteem issues, there is a reluctance to participate in a group programme. There are some fears about judgement from others. Also not feeling confident enough to speak up and so getting lost in the crowd within a group.
However I strongly believe that group coaching can be an excellent choice for building confidence and understanding common issues such as perfectionism excessive worry and imposter syndrome.
Here are some key POSITIVE REASONS that I believe makes group coaching more beneficial than one-on-one coaching for confidence building:
- Shared Experiences: Group coaching provides a platform for participants to share their experiences and challenges. Knowing that others face similar issues can boost your confidence as you realise you’re not alone in your struggles. When you hear how someone else might beat themselves up with self-criticism and feelings of inferiority, there can be a moment when the lightbulb goes off ‘It’s not just me!’

- Diverse Perspectives: In a group, you benefit from diverse perspectives and solutions. This can lead to a richer learning experience and more comprehensive strategies for confidence building. For example, hearing from people who are managers as well as employees can aid discussions and broaden your perspective in a supportive way. This is also true for common challenges based on race, sexuality and gender. The more perspectives we hear the better our understanding of how there is no one ‘right’ way to think. It can also help to bring out discussions of prejudice and discrimination and so develop deeper understanding of these issues.
- Accountability: Group dynamics can foster accountability. When you commit to your goals in front of others, you’re more likely to follow through, thus enhancing your confidence as you see progress. I’ve certainly found this to be a great benefit of the group. Hearing how people have made commitments to take action can be a positive motivation for everyone and builds anticipation in finding out how they got on.
- Peer Support: The camaraderie and support within a group can be motivating. Encouragement from peers can be a powerful confidence booster. Knowing people are listening and supporting you can build a sense of community.
- Cost-Effective: Group coaching can be a more cost-effective option compared to one-on-one coaching. This accessibility allows more individuals to access valuable confidence-building resources. As I offer online courses and coaching this too can boost engagement in a group.

- Networking: Group coaching often involves networking opportunities. Building professional relationships within the group can enhance your confidence by expanding your professional network.
However, it’s important to note that the effectiveness of group coaching may vary based on the relevance to your needs and the dynamics within the group. In some cases, individuals may prefer one-on-one coaching for a more personalised approach. It ultimately depends on your specific needs and comfort level.
