Is doubt stopping you from going for a promotion?

June 12, 2023by Carrie0

Are you waiting until you feel qualified enough to go for that promotion? How do you know when you are ready? Do you doubt yourself?….

Self-doubt is a common obstacle

Self-doubt is a common obstacle that many people face in their personal and professional lives. It can prevent you from pursuing your goals, expressing your opinions, and taking risks. However, self-doubt is not a permanent condition that you have to live with.
These are three ways to overcome self-doubt and become more confident in yourself and your abilities. By recognizing your inner critic, reframing your thoughts, and taking action, you can overcome the barriers that hold you back and achieve your full potential.

1. Recognize your inner critic

The first step to overcoming self-doubt is to identify the source of it: your inner critic. This is the voice in your head that tells you that you are not good enough, smart enough, or capable enough. It often exaggerates your flaws and minimizes your strengths. It also compares you to others and makes you feel inadequate.

The key is to notice when your inner critic is active and to challenge its negative messages. You can do this by asking yourself questions like: Is this true? What evidence do I have? What would I say to a friend who felt this way? For example, if your inner critic tells you that you are not qualified for a job, you can remind yourself of your education, skills, and achievements that make you a good candidate.

2. Reframe your thoughts

The second step to overcoming self-doubt is to change the way you think about yourself and your situation. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do or what might go wrong, focus on what you can do and what might go right.

Instead of seeing challenges as threats, see them as opportunities to learn and grow. Instead of putting yourself down, affirm yourself with positive statements like: I can do this. I have the skills and experience. I am worthy of respect and success. For example, if you are nervous about giving a presentation, you can tell yourself that you have prepared well, that you have valuable information to share, and that you can handle any questions or feedback.

3. Take action

The third step to overcoming self-doubt is to act on your goals and aspirations. Are you allowing fear or uncertainty to stop you from trying new things, expressing your ideas, or taking risks? Here’s the thing, let go of wanting perfection. The key is to take an approach where you don’t hold onto the expectations that it needs to be ‘right’ but instead just take the first step to learn more about what works. The more you do, the more you will build your confidence and competence. You will also learn from your mistakes and feedback, which will help you improve and grow. Remember that action breeds confidence, while inaction breeds doubt. For example, if you want to start a new hobby, sign up for a class or join a club that interests you.

If you want to advance your career, the way to do it is to apply for new challenges, opportunities, or a promotion or seek out a mentorship program.

Taking action means feeling uncomfortable as you go beyond your comfort zone. Feeling uncomfortable doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.
