Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) focuses on a person’s present concerns. An EMDR approach looks at how past emotionally charged experiences are overly influencing their present emotions, sensations and thoughts about themselves. EMDR uses rapid sets of eye movements and alternate body tapping to help update disturbing images, replicating REM of sleep.
EMDR focuses on the brain’s ability to constantly learn, taking past experiences and updating them with present information. This is called adaptive learning. Past emotionally charged experiences – often linked to traumatic events – interfere with this updating process. EMDR breaks through the block and helps the past memory that has been stuck to be processed. In this way the person’s experiences are updated to hold a healthier present perspective about what was traumatic.
This form of therapy doesn’t require the person to tell the therapist all the details of what happened, it is enough that you are bringing it to mind and feeling it in your body. Often an old memory is help in our emotions and physically in our body and this is likely to emerge during the therapy reprocessing.
